Your group designs a microprocessor for use in cell phones and palmtop computers. You currently fabricate your chips on a 0.13micron process. A new fabrication facility with a 90nm process has asked you if you would like to switch to their facility.
What do you believe will be the three most important tradeoffs between remaining with the 0.13 micron fabrication process and switching to the 90nm process?

The few things which I can think of is :
ReplyDelete1. The area decreases when moving down the microns.
2. The power consumption increases at 90 nm.
3. The routing congestion increases.
4. The DRC / LVS become complicated.
5. The library has to be recharacterized for the new process.
I know there are few more please share / correct me if my thought is wrong.
Increase in Leakage power but a decrease in dynamic power. Total power may significantly increase due to Leakage.
ReplyDeleteMethodologies need to be tightened to low power design due to above.
Scaling done depends on whether it is a constant voltage scaling or constant field scaling...both have their own consequences...
