The OpenGMSL Association is a non-profit organization dedicated to standardizing GMSL, a high-speed Serializer/Deserializer (SerDes) technology developed by Analog Devices, Inc. (ADI). The association brings together industry leaders, including Aptiv PLC, DENSO CORPORATION, Geely Holding Group, GlobalFoundries, Hyundai Mobis, Qualcomm Technologies, Inc., and others, to create an open ecosystem for video and high-speed data transmission. With over 1 billion GMSL ICs shipped and adoption by more than 25 global OEMs and 50 Tier-1 suppliers, GMSL is a mature, road-proven technology now being transformed into an open standard to drive innovation.
As stated on the official OpenGMSL website, the association’s mission is to “enable seamless, high-speed data and video connectivity across the automotive industry, fostering collaboration and innovation.”
OpenGMSL faces competition from standards like MIPI A-PHY (MIPI Alliance) and ASA-ML (Automotive SerDes Alliance), which also target high-speed data transmission for ADAS and infotainment.
Automotive Ethernet is another contender, known for its high bandwidth and low latency.
However, as discussed earlier in our blog, OpenGMSL’s advantage lies in its foundation on GMSL’s proven ecosystem and widespread adoption.
A follow-up article, “OpenGMSL: Can It Succeed Against Its Own?,” explores challenges like market fragmentation but notes OpenGMSL’s strong industry backing as a key differentiator.
To ensure reliability, OpenGMSL mandates compliance testing for all products, guaranteeing seamless multi-vendor interoperability.
The association will showcase its vision at AutoSens in Detroit, June 10-12, 2025, inviting further industry collaboration.
