First published 21 December 2023, shortly after both chip families launched. Comparisons reflect the products as announced at the time. Intel's Core Ultra 7 155H closed much of the gap with Apple's M3 family on graphics and AI features, but it did not put Intel clearly back on top. Apple's M3 chips, built on TSMC's 3 nm process, kept a lead in performance per watt and battery life, while the Core Ultra, with its compute tile …

Apple's M3, M3 Pro and M3 Max, announced on 30 October 2023, were the first personal computer chips built on a 3-nanometre-class process, TSMC's first-generation N3 (widely referred to as N3B). The M3 Pro is the surprise of the family: it has fewer performance cores and less memory bandwidth than the M2 Pro it replaced. The video below is an in-depth analysis of the three chips, with a silicon deep-dive, die-shot analysis and a closer lo…

News from February 2021. Intel struck back at Apple with a new advertising campaign aimed at the M1-powered Mac line. The campaign took a dig at the M1's limitations and highlighted features that, in Intel's telling, were only possible on a Windows PC built around an Intel processor. The campaign was posted on Intel's Twitter account on 2 February 2021 and on other platforms, and Intel also partnered with a YouTuber to argue the c…

The first Macs built on Apple's own M1 chip went on sale in November 2020: the MacBook Air, the 13-inch MacBook Pro and the Mac mini. The M1 is an Arm-based system on a chip (SoC) made by TSMC on its 5 nm process, and it replaced Intel processors in those models. It brought a big jump in performance per watt, which is why the first M1 laptops ran cooler and much longer on battery than the Intel models they replaced. This is a news post f…

In April 2020, Bloomberg reported that Apple was on track to start selling Macs with its own processors in 2021, using chips built by TSMC on a 5-nanometre process. The report turned out to be right about the direction and the factory, and a little cautious on timing. Apple announced the switch in June 2020 and shipped the first Macs with its own M1 chip in November 2020. The original news report and our notes from April 2020 follow, with an upd…

In response to the iPhone 4g post i ran yesterday i got quite a few comments and i want to highlight one of them specifically! One of our readers Simon Owens got a chance recently to interview Gawker's Nick Denton and found out that despite the fact that he paid $5,000 to the people who found the iPhone, Gawker Media received no direct revenue from those millions of pageviews it received from publishing the scoop.

Are the original vendors already out of the window with the entry of PA Semi?

Hold the presses: Apple may be releasing a new iPhone this year... with 3G! Crazy, we know. The latest iteration of this rumor comes to us courtesy of UBS analysts, who say Infineon will likely be building chips for the phone -- they're powering the current iPhone, so no real surprise there. UBS is also betting on a mid-year 3G iPhone launch, and thinks that EDGE production will ramp down early so Apple gets a chance to clean out inventories…
