This is a news post from October 2013, describing the LG G2 as it was at launch. Prices, rankings and software versions have long since changed.
In October 2013 the LG G2 was one of the fastest Android smartphones on the market, built around Qualcomm's then-new Snapdragon 800 chip with a 2.26 GHz quad-core CPU and Adreno 330 graphics. It paired that with a 5.2-inch 1080p display, 2 GB of RAM and a large 3,000 mAh battery, which gave it a strong balance of speed and battery life against the Samsung Galaxy S4 and Apple iPhone 5S.
The smartphone market in 2013
In the smartphone war of 2013, the only two mobile phone makers widely reported to be making notable profits were Apple (with iOS) and Samsung (with Android). With Android, and Samsung in particular, dominating global market share, players such as LG, HTC, Pantech and Sony were fighting for a share as well.
What made the G2 fast
The LG G2 followed LG's Optimus G and Optimus G Pro, and was the first phone in LG's new G series of premium devices. It was one of the few smartphones on the market at the time powered by Qualcomm's Snapdragon 800 quad-core SoC.
The G2 has a 5.2-inch 1080p display, 2 GB of RAM and up to 32 GB of on-board storage. The 2.26 GHz quad-core Snapdragon 800 also includes Qualcomm's Adreno 330 GPU, which in 2013 reviews held its own against NVIDIA's Tegra 4 in gaming and graphics performance.
From a chip point of view, the Snapdragon 800 brought together four Krait CPU cores, the Adreno 330 GPU, an integrated LTE modem and image signal processing on one SoC. That level of integration was a large part of why phones like the G2 could combine speed with good battery life.
Design and battery life
The G2 has a rather unorthodox volume rocker and power button assembly on the back of the phone, but once you get used to the location, it is a comfortable arrangement.
What is impressive is the G2's performance combined with its 3,000 mAh battery, which offers a solid balance of horsepower and battery life and rivals flagship phones such as the Samsung Galaxy S4 and Apple's iPhone 5S.
