Automotive electronics work as one control loop: sensors measure what is happening in and around the car, microcontrollers and processors decide what to do, vehicle networks carry the data and commands, and actuators and power electronics carry out the decision. In an electric vehicle the same electronics also convert and manage the energy that moves the car. No single part is useful on its own; reliability comes from designing the whole chain t…

TSMC
TSMC is leaving the gallium nitride (GaN) wafer foundry business and will stop GaN production by 31 July 2027, according to reports in early July 2025 that the company confirmed. GaN was a small, low-margin line for TSMC under heavy price pressure from Chinese foundries, and the company is putting the capacity and people towards advanced packaging and leading-edge nodes, where AI demand is strongest. This is a dated news post from 6 July 2025; a…

Semiconductor Manufacturing
Gallium nitride (GaN) is a wide-bandgap III-V compound semiconductor with a bandgap of about 3.4 eV, three times that of silicon. That wide bandgap gives it a breakdown field roughly ten times higher than silicon, and its AlGaN/GaN heterostructure forms a fast, high-density electron channel without doping. Together these let GaN transistors switch faster, at higher voltage and with lower losses than silicon in chargers, power supplies and RF amp…

A software-defined vehicle (SDV) is a car whose features are set mainly by software running on a small number of powerful computers, and which keeps gaining or changing features through over-the-air updates after it is sold. Designing one is hard because it combines the scale of a large software project with the safety, security, cost and lifetime demands of automotive hardware. The ten challenges below cover software development, cybersecurity,…

Image courtesy: Bing LED bulbs give the same light as incandescent bulbs for roughly a sixth of the power and last many times longer, so they cost more to buy but far less to own. CFLs sit in between: about a quarter of the power of an incandescent bulb, a shorter life than LEDs, and a small amount of mercury inside. For almost every home and office use today, LED is the right choice; incandescent bulbs still win only on perfect colour render…

Power Electronics
In February 2023, the New York Times reported , using data from the International Council on Clean Transportation (ICCT), a research and advocacy organisation, that electric cars in America could reach the point that year where they cost the same as, or less than, comparable internal combustion engine vehicles. The main reasons were falling battery costs, price cuts by EV makers and the new federal tax credit for clean vehicles. This is a ne…

An RCCB (Residual Current Circuit Breaker) senses current: it compares the current going out on the live conductor with the current coming back on the neutral, and trips when the difference, the residual current, passes its rated threshold. A voltage-operated ELCB (Earth Leakage Circuit Breaker) senses voltage: it watches the voltage that appears on the earth wire of the protected equipment relative to a separate earth electrode, and trips when …

An idea for the festival season. This basic circuit can be easily modified for 120v operation and more LEDs can be added as well. Please use extreme caution while handling this circuit since the mains is not isolated and so there is a risk of heavy electric shock.

Say YES for changing ONE light to LED at home. Get your organization to say YES to change ONE light per employee to LED and to encourage each employee to adopt ONE light for home. To know more and to say YES, see the brochure at http://bit.ly/aJyQHp If you can reach your organization to implement LED lights and to encourage employees to adopt LED lights through this campaign, leave a comment indicating name of the organization /department and…

Semiconductor Manufacturing
A new manufacturing process could cut the cost of making crystalline silicon wafers for solar cells by 80 percent. The process is being developed by Lexington, MA-based 1366 Technologies , which this week showed off the first solar cells made this way. The technology is key to the company's plan to make solar power cheaper than the electricity generated from coal within 10 years. Follow the links for more info.

Power Electronics
Systems designers are having a difficult time developing power subsystems that supply all of their system's power needs due to varied and changing power requirements. A new type of power subsystem, the field-programmable power subsystem or FPPS, squarely addresses this issue by providing a flexible approach that costs no more than conventional switching power subsystems. This white paper discusses the advantages and benefits of field-progra…
RF and Wireless
Engineers at Nokia have hatched a plan to for a system that'll charge phones using nothing more than ambient electromagnetic radiation, or, as you and I might put it, electricity sucked from thin air. It sounds a little sci-fi at first, but it's not: RFID tags are powered by electrical signals converted from electromagnetic waves emitted by a nearby sensor machine, which is exactly how this system is said to work. The thing is, the amo…
